Valencia coach Gattuso: We want to give our fans special Copa night; we know they're angry

Valencia coach Rino Gattuso says they want to give their fans a special night against Athletic Bilbao.

The two teams meet tonight in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal.

Gattuso said: "It is an important match, as all games are. Tomorrow is a Copa del Rey quarterfinal against a very brave team, and we have to give priority to the cup.

"It's normal that at this stage of the competition we have played two games and we have won both. In the league we are having a lot of difficulty, but a single elimination game is important. That is why the priority is the Copa del Rey.

"I feel that the fans are angry and it's normal, because we aren't in a good position in the table. I already said the other day that the responsibility is mine because I am the coach and I have to accept it. But I only have one direction in which to go, because I see that the team are alive, how we train.

"If I were to see that the team didn't follow me, the best thing would be to go to the club and get them to change coach. But I see that the team are alive, they are training well and the feeling for me is positive. I haven't talked about this with the club, but it's normal for the club to not be happy with how the season is going."

The Italian was also asked about any late signings this month.

He replied: "I always respond the same way. We are waiting, just like the fans are waiting and I am also waiting. The club know that we are lacking a midfielder. From the first days that we talked about transfers, we have always also talked about numbers and Financial Fair Play.

"I hope for players who give me the chance to improve the team. If we're signing for signing's sake, then we are fine as we are. We are looking for a midfielder who can play in all midfield positions.

"We have talked about players at a good level, but who cannot be signed because of the numbers. If we look at a young kid who has quality and can play as I would like, I am open to everything, but he has to have the qualities that I want.

"If the player who arrives is on the pace and has played matches, that's fine. If he hasn't played and we have to wait for him to pick up the rhythm, it's too late. I care about the player's rhythm and if he is of a level that he can quickly understand things, but it is important that he has minutes in his legs.

"If no player arrives I have to continue working, and that's that."
