Tottenham will not be allowed to field new £9m signing Alan Hutton in the Uefa Cup this season.

Right-back Hutton played for Rangers in the Champions League and now that the Scottish club have now dropped into the Uefa Cup he is ineligible to play.

Spurs play Slavia Prague on 14 February and a club spokesman said: "We knew about this when we signed him.

"If Rangers had stayed in the Champions League we would have been able to play him but now we cannot."
