Tottenham's Argentina defender Romero: I now realise what we achieved

Tottenham's Argentina defender Cristian Romero says being a World Cup winner has now sunk in.

Tough-tackling Romero has regained his form after a testing adjustment period following his country's epic victory over France, in Qatar, but it has not been easy to move on from the events of last December.

"Only now, a few weeks later, I realise that what we achieved is something incredible," he said.

"I watch the World Cup Final game every day.

"I get excited with the celebrations in Argentina, the way the people treat us was extraordinary.

"I think the group deserved to win the World Cup. We have a fantastic group because we always pushed forward together."

In the aftermath, downtown Buenos Aires descended into chaos as Argentina's heroes were welcomed home.

Five years earlier, at 18, Romero had thought about calling time on his fledgling career.

Fast forward half a decade and he had lived his greatest footballing experience, alongside the game's greatest-ever player.

"At the beginning, it was tough because I was tired mentally," he added.

"The World Cup required a lot of mental focus like I never experienced before."
