Tottenham matchwinner Van de Ven: I knew what Maddison was doing

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was delighted after victory over Luton Town.

Van de Ven proved the matchwinner as Yves Bissouma was sent off in the 1-0 triumph.

The Dutchman said: "An incredible match, I think we showed a great mentality as a team. Really happy I managed to score my first goal for the club and we got a clean sheet too, which is what we want as defenders.

"I knew James Maddison, always when he goes past the defence, looks for the cut back. So I stepped backwards from where I was in the box, the ball came to me and I just tapped it in. An amazing feeling.

"Yes, they were very happy for me. On the way to the stadium on the bus Sonny [Son Heung-min] told me: 'You're going to score your first goal today.' I didn't think so, I said: 'Maybe, who knows!' But it is perfect because now I have scored my first goal."

On his and Spurs' start to the season, he added: "It has been really good. We have showed that we are together as a team, like a family. We have a great mentality and motivation as a team and we need to keep going in this way.

"We need to make sure that we stay fit when we go away with the national teams, everybody has to come back fit and ready. Then when we get back, we have to continue."
