Torres? Matic? 3 positions Tottenham must improve for title challenge

Jose Mourinho has a reputation for winning trophies at every new club he manages. He did it at Chelsea, did it at Manchester United, and now Spurs fans will be hoping he can do it for them as well.

However, there's a clear difference in quality between Tottenham and their top six counterparts, due in large part to Tottenham's lack of serious transfer activity over the past couple of seasons.

While Jose Mourinho has a solid squad under his disposal, if he wants to take Tottenham to new heights, he's going to have to do some major business before the transfer window closes.

So far, Tottenham have completed the signing of Matt Doherty from Wolves, but going into the final month of the transfer window, Jose Mourinho will need to sign a new centre-back to cover his side's defensive frailties, a new striker to serve as a viable alternative to Harry Kane and an out-and-out defensive midfielder to provide the team with some added defensive cover.

On that note, here's a look at three players who could fill in those roles for Tottenham:

Pau Torres - Centre-Back

Tottenham conceded 47 league goals last season. If Tottenham want to secure a top four finish, or go even further to win the Premier League, they can't afford to concede that many goals.

Spurs will need to bolster their defensive set-up ahead of next season, especially considering the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are on a steady decline.

Davinson Sanchez is in desperate need of a new partner in defence, one that he can form a long-term double act with - and on that note, one player fits the bill quite nicely for that role - Villarreal's Pau Torres.

Pau Torres has attracted the interest of Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing the 23-year-old centre-back, however, considering Tottenham's current situation, it would be a good idea for Jose Mourinho to make an inquiry about the player's services as he could turn out to be a real gem alongside Davinson Sanchez next season.

Standing at 6'3 and boasting great athleticism, Pau Torres is one of the brightest young defenders in Europe at the moment. He still has a ton of developing to do, but under a manager of Jose Mourinho's caliber he could turn out to be a world-class centre-back.

Nemanja Matic - Defensive Midfield

Last season, Nemanja Matic proved that he's still capable of producing world-class displays even at the age of 32.

He's been linked with a move to Tottenham ever since Jose Mourinho got appointed as the club's new manager and considering how well he played under Mourinho at Chelsea and United, it would make sense for Mourinho to work with Matic once again.

Matic is one of the best defensive midfielders of the Premier League era. While he may be past his prime, Matic remains a quality midfielder capable of making an impact whenever he's called upon.

Maxi Gomez - Striker

For years now, Harry Kane has been Tottenham's primary source of goals, so much so that the club tends to struggle to find the back of the net without him on the pitch.

Tottenham are in need of a player who can take the goalscoring burden off the England international, and Valencia's Maxi Gomez could be the man to do that.

Gomez managed to score 10 league goals for Valencia last season, after rejecting a move to West Ham to join the La Liga side.

The 23-year-old is pacy, great in the air, and has the intelligence to make runs into dangerous areas. He's highly capable of supplementing Harry Kane's goalscoring efforts.

He'd be an excellent addition to Tottenham's ranks, as he'd be able to provide the team with some much-needed depth and quality.
