Sunderland winger Johnson targets England recall

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson retains ambitions of making England's World Cup squad.

Johnson has been on standby for his country in the last two finals and won the last of his 12 caps against Italy 12 months ago. He has yet to feature in the Brazil 2014 qualifying campaign but says the desire to play for England "burns inside" him.

He said: "This is probably as good as I've felt for a while now and I'm excited for this season. Hopefully I'll get even fitter and stronger. The first game was a bit of a shock for everybody, but I'm sure the team will get better and me personally as well. I'm feeling good.

"England is still burning inside me. It's a massive season for me, just as it is for every player who has represented their country. I've said this before, but to be on standby for the last two major tournaments and to miss out both times was really disappointing and tough to take, particularly with the way I was playing at the time."
