Sunderland derby goal was like scoring for England says Defoe

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe shed a tear after scoring a superb volley on Sunday which earned his club a crucial 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

The 32-year old produced a stunning left-footed strike on the stroke of half-time as the Black Cats made it five-straight Tyne-Wear derby wins over the Magpies and went on to compare the goal to scoring for the England national team.

He said: "It was great to be the person to make so many people happy. When you're a young kid playing football you just want to play in massive games.

"When the goal went in, I had to keep reminding myself that it was all real.

"The only thing I can liken this goal to in terms of the feeling it gave me was scoring for England in a World Cup. It's right up there with my most memorable."

The victory in the north east derby helped Sunderland move up to 15th spot on the Premier League table, three points clear of the relegation zone.
