Sunderland boss O'Neill rues missing out on Bolton skipper Davies

Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle was delighted with two-goal Kevin Davies after their draw at Sunderland.

Davies's inspirational lead from the front enthused Bolton boss Coyle, who fended off Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill's winter transfer-window call.

"It was a non-story," said Coyle. "When Martin came I told him the only way Kevin Davies was going to leave was if he wanted to and he didn't, so it was dead in the water."

O'Neill wanted Davies to nurture his strikers - and no wonder. Bendtner has struggled, Fraizer Campbell flagged, Won Ji-dong sat on the bench and Connor Wickham is injured again.

The Sunderland manager said: "He has been a fine player for a considerable time and obviously will be very important for Bolton."
