Spurs star: Losing Champions League final with Atletico Madrid still hurts

Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld has revealed that losing the Champions League final while with Atletico Madrid still haunts him.

Atletico managed to reach the final of the 2014 Champions League against all odds and Los Rojiblancos were seconds away from victory over rivals Real Madrid, only to concede a late equaliser before going on to lose 4-1 in extra time.

Spurs centre-half Alderweireld was one of the players who featured for Atletico on the night and the Belgian international has revealed that he is still a feeling of hurt whenever he recalls the defeat.

Alderweireld said: "Of course it hurts.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win the Champions League. We gave everything in the 90 minutes and, after that, extra time was difficult for us.

"I look back at the whole season and not only the final – we had won La Liga the previous weekend and two days after the final, I was preparing for the World Cup with Belgium.

"I've tried to look at it that way – not only the negatives. But, of course, it hurts if you talk about it."
