Sporting CP coach Amorim: Spurs letting Edwards go is understandable

Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim has no doubts about the talent of Marcus Edwards.

Edwards will face former club Tottenham in tonight's Champions League clash.

Amorim said: "He's a player who has a lot of talent, everyone in England said the same thing. I think a former coach said he had something from (Lionel) Messi. It was for a good club in Portugal, developed, came to a big one, is growing a lot and playing in the Champions.

"He's maturing. He can improve a lot, the talent is there, but he can greatly improve what is the relationship with training, with schedules, with keeping the level high every day, not only in games but in day to day, what it is to be in professional football.

"He's a very cheerful boy, he's happy at our club, he's got a special relationship with St. Juste and Fatawu. This helps players be better on a day-to-day life. There's still a lot to give and improve. I see a very bright future. It happens to a lot of players. Coaches and scouting don't always have to get it right, there are certain players who at the moment have no level - I don't just talk about talent - but then they go out a little bit and come back. It happened to Nuno Santos.

"He's still too young. I'm not surprised. Atletico's João Félix left FC Porto for Benfica. The coaches make an assessment of the moment, someone looked at him and thought he had a lot of talent but would have to go through other sides to get to a top club. And right now he's in a top club."
