Souness: Man City missing Fernandinho in midfield

Graeme Souness says Manchester City have missed Fernandinho playing as a holding midfielder.

The Brazilian has moved from his natural position to fill in at centre-back in place of the injured Aymeric Laporte.

Souness said in the Sky Sports studio: "I think he [Fernandinho] has arguably been the best around for three or four years in that position. The last time he played in midfield for City was against Spurs in April, [he has] not played there this year.

"I think really the vast majority of the problems are down to the fact he's no longer that holding man in midfield, the man who senses danger before anyone else does. He's creative, he's aggressive.

"I think in the modern game you have the full backs pushed right up. You need someone in the middle of the pitch that's looking to see where this breaks down, where is the danger he does that better than anybody else. As well as being an excellent footballer he's got a fabulous footballing brain."
