Rooney insists he's right man for Derby job

Manchester United great Wayne Rooney insists he's the right man for the job at Derby County.

England's record goalscorer has been interim manager for six matches, in which the Rams have shown an improvement to form and are unbeaten in that time.

Rooney has not included himself in the matchday squad since Phillip Cocu's departure and with retirement edging ever closer, the 35-year-old is keen to take up his first permanent managerial role with the club.

He said, "I think the results and performances justify that (being placed as interim manager).

"I think it was a tough place the club was in, in terms of Phillip (Cocu) left the club and me and Liam (Rosenior) went in, but I think it was clear that it needed one leader. It was me who went in charge, and the reaction - not just from the players, but from the coaches - has been fantastic and we are all pulling in the same direction, and we are all trying to move this club forward.

"As I have said before, I am confident in my ability to do the job. Six games I think everyone is starting to see a way I want the team to play.

"I believe in my own ability to manage this club, I want to manage this club, and that decision obviously is down to the owners."
