REVEALED: Lopetegui rethink inspired Real Madrid equaliser

Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui is being credited for rescuing a point at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Marca says Lopetegui's decision to change his planned substitution in the second-half was key to their equaliser.

The coach planned to throw on Isco in the 61st minute with Bilbao 1-0 ahead and take off Gareth Bale.

Isco was given the message to warm up and once changed was ready to enter the pitch, only for assistant coach Chendo to stall the substitution. Lopetegui and his staff were seen speaking frantically and eventually rather than Bale, the call came for Luka Modric to come off for Isco. Chendo had the numbers changed on the substitution board as Lopetegui spoke to Isco.

Upon entering the pitch, two minutes later Bale laid on a pass for Isco to score Real's equaliser.
