Rangnick holds first media conference discusses Chelsea, Man Utd role and Carrick exit

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has held his first media conference as manager today.

The German first discussed why he chose United after turning down Chelsea in January.

He said, "When Chelsea contacted me in February they only spoke of the option to be interim manager for four months. Here is six and a half months and as you know we have agreed a two year advisory role.

"In the end, when a club like Manchester United contacts you for such a role you cannot possibly turn it down.

"Obviously I have watched the latest games, also against Watford and Chelsea on TV when I didn't know I would be contacted. [Plus] the games against Manchester City and Liverpool.

"I'm well acquainted with what is happening in the Premier League. It's obvious the squad has talent and experience. The challenge is to bring more balance into the team. Even yesterday we needed three goals to win the game. It's almost two goals on average conceded per game and this is too much.

"Yesterday's game was exciting for the fans but as the coach they are not the games you need every day. For me it is to minimise the coincidence factor and have control of the game."

On whether there is the chance he could stay on as manager longer than the end of the season, Rangnick says: "The people with whom I have spoken have been very clear we are speaking of a six month role.

"We have never spoken about what will happen in the summer. If they will then speak with me about that, we will see. If everything goes well I might make the same recommendation at RB Leipzig that it will be good to keep working for one year - but it is all hypothetical.

"For me it is all about winning the next games."

On what is United side could look like, Rangnick said: "I think to gain control on games in the future it has to do with playing proactively.

"It is about helping the team play together. It is about togetherness, team spirit - the two halves yesterday were completely different and having these unique fans behind us will help us. It is not easy, I cannot do it in a few training sessions. It's about control - this is the major target."

On the departure of Michael Carrick from the club, Rangnick adds: "I got to know this two days ago. I had a private conversation with him for more than an hour. I tried to persuade him to stay on board but in the end I had to accept his decision.

"I am more than happy to work with the current staff because I need their expertise on the current squad. I will maybe try to find a few people. Many of my long-term colleagues are in contracts with big clubs so are not available."
