Philadelphia Union scouring Europe, South America for affordable goalscorer

Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin has confirmed that the club is on the lookout for a quality striker.

The Union did not struggle for goals in 2014, scoring 51 in the Eastern Conference, with Sebastien Le Toux leading the way with 12 during the regular season.

However, Curtin admits they need an out-and-out goalscorer at PPL Park in 2015 to solve the few problems which saw them miss out on play-offs by seven points.

Curtin says the club will cast their eye over the markets in Europe and South America to find a new attacker but made it clear that the Union will not break the bank.

"We're not going to bring in a $7 million forward," Curtin told MLSsoccer.com.

"I talked to the owners, and that's not something that is going to happen. But you can still find a quality goalscorer in Europe for that next tier of spending.

"We have a clear agenda of which guys we want to target. And there are good relationships with clubs for loans. That's going to be kind of our mechanism to bring players in. We'll look at every opportunity to get the best bang for our buck because we're limited by the salary cap."

Curtin added that Philly certainly are not going in blind as they do have specific targets in mind.

"We're not going to go on a wild goose chase," he said. "The targets are clear. We know who we want to see, and we're going to see them."
