Perth Glory score late penalty to take points from Newcastle

Perth Glory have notched up their second away win in a row, defeating a desperately unlucky Newcastle Jets 1-0. An 81st minute penalty to Mile Sterjovski was the difference in the end but Jets coach Branko Culina will say his side deserved the points.

In a somewhat one-sided contest, neither side really troubled the opposing goalkeeper early on.

Newcastle's Kaz Patafta managed to force his way through a group of Glory defenders in the16th minute on the edge of the area but was taken by surprise that he actually got through and somehow forced his own shot wide.

For a period of about ten minutes, the Glory pushed forward, dominating possession in their half and forcing a number of corners but could not pierce the Jets defence.

Five minutes prior to the break, Jets striker Labinot Haliti found space at the top of the box and saw his shot beat Glory keeper Tando Velaphi but it whistled into the upright and out to safety to the relief of the visiting side.

The Jets were beginning to press forward and in the 43rd minute Haliti moved down the left flank and chipped in a ball for Jin-Hyung Song but the Korean's header could not find the target and the score remained all tied up at the break.

The home side started the second term brightly but were unable to produce any clear chances as the Glory appeared to be waiting for something to happen.

A midfield battle ensued for much of the second half with both sides having periods of high possession but the Jets were well on top and looked most likely to score.

Against the run of play, Perth Glory won themselves a penalty when Jets keeper Ben Kennedy brought down Mile Sterjovski with ten minutes remaining.

Sterjovski stepped up to the spot and hit it into the underside of the crossbar to give the Glory a 1-0 lead.

The Jets could not buy a goal and in the end went down to the Glory despite dominating much of proceedings.
