Newcastle supporters got us over the line against Villa - de Jong

Newcastle United striker Luuk de Jong has thanked the fans for helping the players produce a much-needed victory on the weekend.

The Magpies edged Aston Villa 1-0 at St James' Park thanks to an injury-time winner from Loic Remy with Dutchman de Jong suggesting it was the Toon faithful who really pushed the playing group over the line for their first home win since Boxing Day.

"It was really important to win at home, especially for the fans," the winter signing told the Gazette.

"They pushed us on in the last five or 10 minutes, and that helped us.

"We created some good chances and eventually at the end we scored the goal."

De Jong, who signed on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach last month, added: "Everyone is happy as we hadn't won for a few games.

"We were afraid they may score on the counter near the end, but we also have to say that our defence and Tim Krul were really good."
