Newcastle's Wheelhouse intent on being fit for semi-final

Newcastle Jets midfielder Jobe Wheelhouse is determined to get himself right for the minor semi-final against Wellington Phoenix in just over a week-and-a-half.

The 24-year old pulled up sore after the penalty shootout win over Gold Coast United but gives himself every chance of getting his groin injury up to scratch in the next 12 or so days before the knockout match.

"I'm struggling to walk at the moment but I will do whatever I can to get right," Wheelhouse said yesterday.

"Missing the game is not an option. It is not in my mind. I've got a fortnight, so that should be enough.

"I wasn't 100 per cent in the first place.

"At half-time I thought I'd get through another 10 or 15 minutes but I was lucky to get through to 80-odd."

Coach Branko Culina said the club would monitor Wheelhouse closely and make a decision on him much closer to game day, which is Sunday March 7.

"The problem is, even if he is right on the day, he has not done anything for a while," Culina said.

"Finals football involves a lot more pressure and is far more physical, so we will see."
