However, the striker is yet to claim any team silverware during his time Gold Coast United, Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory and now Sydney.<p>"It's well known that I had other offers on the table but my aim is to win trophies and I believe with the squad this club is putting together for next season, I have the best chance of winning something here," the New Zealand international said.<p>"With the Asian Champions League coming up, another FFA Cup run and a fresh crack at the A-League it's going to be an enthralling season.<p>"It's going to be a very exciting couple of years and I'm very happy I'll be a part of it."<p>Smeltz is the A-League's second all-time leading goal-scorer with his 85 goals behind only Melbourne Victory's Archie Thompson. </p><a href=''>Read more on Tribal Football</a> Fri, 29 May 2015 04:59:10 +1000 <![CDATA[Ex-Crystal Palace, Wolves, Millwall ace Muscat named captain of A-League Team of the Decade]]> <p>Kevin Muscat has been named captain of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) A-League Team of the Decade.<p>The 41-year old Melbourne Victory great was selected at centre-back in the final XI while having the captaincy bestowed upon him for the team which was nominated from players who have competed in the competition since its inception in 2005.<p>Muscat, who coached the Victory to this season's minor premiership, played for the Melbourne outfit between 2005 and 2011 and captained the club to two minor premierships and two championships during his playing days.<p>The former Crystal Palace, Wolves, Millwall and Rangers hard-man was delighted to be named as captain of the team which brings together the very best to have played in Australia's top flight.<p>"It's an incredible honour to be selected in the PFA A-League Team of the Decade and I am extremely humbled to also be named captain," said Muscat.<p>"To be nominated by my peers, both past and present, is extremely humbling and something that I take great pride in.<p>"I would like to thank Melbourne Victory for giving me the opportunity to return to Australia back in 2005. I have nothing but respect for everyone who has been associated with the club and I look forward to what the future holds. I would also like to thank my teammates for their support over the years. Victory to chase his dream of playing professionally in Europe.<p>The 24-year old Ivory Coast-born defender has ended a successful two-year spell with the Victory to make the move overseas after spending the past five years in Australia.<p>Traore, who became an Australian citizen in April this year, was grateful to the Victory for what they did for him during his time in Melbourne but suggested the chance to head to Europe was something he couldn't turn down.<p>"I have loved every minute that I have been at Melbourne Victory," the former Gold Coast United left-back said.<p>"While I would like to have stayed at the club next season, the opportunity to play in Europe is too good for me to pass up.<p>"I'd like to thank (Victory coach) Kevin (Muscat), my teammates and all the staff at the club for everything they have done for me.<p>"I'd also like to say a big thank you to the fans who have made playing for Melbourne very, very special and even though I am looking forward to the forward with another Dusseldorf goal]]> <p>Ben Halloran has put his name forward as a possible World Cup bolter by scoring for the fourth time in a row for Fortuna Dusseldorf.<p>The 21-year old Australian winger scored in the 89th minute as Dusseldorf beat Erzebirge Aue 4-0 at the Esprit Arena on Saturday.<p>The former Gold Coast United and Brisbane Roar forward has now scored five goals in 16 2.Bundesliga games this season with four of those coming this month.<p>Halloran netted each of opening goals in the 2-1 win at Paderborn on April 4, in the 3-1 home victory over FC Aalen a week later and in the 3-0 victory at Sandhausen on April 17 prior to his late strike which helped the Tunas move up to seventh on Germany's second tier table, extending their unbeaten streak to five target as Fortuna Dusseldorf win in Germany]]> <p>Ben Halloran was on the scoresheet as Fortuna Dusseldorf beat Aalen 3-1 in the 2.Bundesliga on the weekend.<p>The 21-year old Australian winger opened the scoring in the 44th minute when he fired home from the edge of the penalty area at the Esprit Arena.<p>Dutch forward Charlison Benschop added a second for Dusseldorf when converting form the penalty spot in the 65th minute before Timm Golley put the home side three ahead with just over 15 minutes remaining.<p>Manuel Junglas pulled one back for Aalen in the final seven minutes but the damage had already been done as Dusseldorf moved into ninth spot in Germany's second division.<p>Former Gold Coast United and Brisbane Roar young gun Halloran has now scored three goals in 14 league from Japan.<p>The 23-year old striker joined 1860 Munich from Kashima Antlers last month and made an immediate impact by netting in the 2.Bundesliga 1-1 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf at the Allianz Arena on Monday.<p>Osako pounced on an error from Dusseldorf keeper Fabian Giefer in the 63rd minute to put 1860 ahead but Australian forward Ben Halloran equalised for the visitors in the 70th <p>Michael Thwaite has signed a new contract with A-League club Perth Glory.<p>The 30-year old centre-back has signed on for a further two years which will see him stay in Western Australia until at least the end of the 2015/16 season.<p>The former National Bucharest, Wisla Krakow, SK Brann, Melbourne Victory and Gold Coast United man was delighted to commit himself to the Glory cause.<p>"I consider myself very lucky to sign another two years at probably the most traditional clubs in the A-League, so it's an honour to extend my stay here," he said.<p>"It's pretty much business as usual for myself. My family obviously enjoys the Perth lifestyle which is a big part of any footballers' career, but on the pitch it's business as usual.<p>"This is a heritage club. This is probably the most traditional club in the A-League and we should be proud of that."<p>&nbsp;For breaking stories and all the great banter like us on Facebook: <a href=></a></p><a href=''>Read more on Tribal Football</a> Mon, 30 Dec 2013 04:28:08 +1100 <![CDATA[Lustica joins Adelaide United after Hajduk Split spell]]> <p>Adelaide United have signed Steven Lustica from Croatian club Hajduk Split.<p>The 22-year old midfielder, who joined Hajduk from Gold Coast United in 2011, underwent loan spells with NK Dugopolje and Brisbane Roar over the past two years but has returned to Australia to sign a one-year deal with the Reds.<p>Lustica admitted he enjoyed his time in Split playing under some famous Hajduk names but is looking to get regular game time in the A-League to enhance his World Cup chances.<p>"I'm happy to have played for Hajduk and that I have been trained by the likes of (Goran) Vucevic, (Ante) Mise, (Krasimir) Balakov, (Miso) Krsticevic, (Igor) Tudor," Lustica told Croatian daily newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija.<p>"Tudor was my idol...but my career has to go forward. I'm hoping to play at the World Cup in Brazil."<p>Adelaide general manager Michael Petrillo added: "Steven is the type of player that fits with the football philosophy of the coach.<p>"He has also spent several years in Europe at a very good club like Hajduk Split where he played in the UEFA Champions League as well.
