Newcastle fullback Trippier: We came here to attack Man Utd

Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier admitted that their gameplan was always to take the game to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Magpies did not hold back in the contest, getting significant possession and creating chances in the first half.

However, they were unable to get a goal for their efforts, and had to do a lot of defending to hold onto a point and a 0-0 draw in the second half.

"We are delighted from the first game until now because we changed our philosophy in how we want to play," Trippier told Sky Sports.

"We want to go for teams and coming to Old Trafford we knew it was going to be difficult.

"We didn't want to sit off them; we wanted to press them and I think it was an entertaining game. To come away from Old Trafford with a draw and a clean sheet, and the chances that we had in the first half as well, yes, we're happy."

Trippier added: "Coming to these types of places you need to be clinical and take your chances, because you don't get many. You see Marcus' chance at the end and these little details are the difference.

"I am happy it didn't go in, obviously, but we need to learn from this. Coming to places to like Man United, the top teams in the league, you need to take your chances."
