Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez admits he wasn't involved in their preseason overseas planning.

The Spaniard's contract expires at the end of the season but discussions over a new deal kicked off during the international break.

The club have confirmed their participation in the Premier League Asia Trophy in July but Benitez says fans should not take that as a guarantee of him staying.

"I knew that the club wanted to go, and after they informed about all the details," he said, hinting that the trip was not his idea.

"In terms of the team, it's not ideal, but you have to manage."
