New Villarreal coach Setien: After 40 years I thought of retirement

Quique Setien admits he considered retirement before getting the call from Villarreal this week.

The former Barcelona coach was confirmed as Unai Emery's replacement on Tuesday and presented to the local media yesterday.

Setien said: "This club is exceptional and the most important thing is to find an identity. I couldn't have been in a better place after two years without a bench.

"I refused several offers, I was waiting for a similar proposal. There is an extraordinary group of the highest level. The call was obviously unexpected, I didn't know they needed a technician. I thought it was a joke but after 5 seconds I stopped being relaxed.

"I am very ambitious; You know my path, this club has been in the Champions League and has experienced exciting moments. I would like to help achieve the goals. After 40 years of career I had thought about retirement, I'm honest. Now I have to get back into the game again.

"Barcelona? It was different, I hope to take advantage of that experience, to be stronger. There will be no revolution: everything takes time but we will not need three months to see changes."
