Nationalism will not be a problem when Scotland host Republic of Ireland - McGhee

Scotland assistant manager Mark McGhee is confident that there will be no problems in this week's Euro2016 qualifier with Republic of Ireland.

The Scots host the Irish at Glasgow's Celtic Park on Friday night in what promises to be an exciting affair but there are fears that nationalism could creep in from a supporter viewpoint.

Two Ireland players, Aiden McGeady and James McCarthy, were both born in Scotland but pledged their allegiance to the country of their grandparents which could bring about a negative reaction from the Scottish fans.

But McGhee believes everything will be fine as he and Gordon Strachan prepare their players for a vital Group D meeting with Martin O'Neill's improving Irish side.

"I can't imagine that. I really can't see that. There are two groups of players and staff who know each other and who have a huge amount of respect for each other," said McGhee.

"I sat beside Martin O'Neill last week at Brentford. I think it has the makings of a hugely competitive game, but I think it is a game that will be played in the best spirit.

"I don't think there will be any other issues. Anything else will be drowned out by the support that hopefully the Scotland fans give their own team, rather than wasting energy on anything else. I know from European nights that the atmosphere that can be generated at Parkhead, like Ibrox, is just sensational.

"With the magnitude of this game, you would expect there to be as good an atmosphere at a Scotland game as there has been for a long time. It is a home game for us, not for them. We have a huge support behind us, we couldn't be set up better."

Scotland currently sit fourth on the group table with four points from three outings while the Republic of Ireland are second with two wins and a draw from their trio of fixtures.
