Mourinho says Europa League is Man Utd priority - ‘This club is made to win trophies’

Jose Mourinho has given the clearest indication yet that Manchester United has prioritised success in the Europa League this season.

The Red Devils went within a point of crosstown rivals Manchester City, who sit fourth on the Premier League table, with a 2-0 win over Burnley on Sunday.

While a top-four finish is certainly achievable this season, Mourinho has highlighted the fact that United is a club used to winning silverware and that they must do everything they can to lift the Europa League trophy.

"[There is] one point [between United and City] so the situation is open but Man City has to play Premier League football and we have to play in the semi-finals of a European competition," he said.

"Yes, it's an objective to try to finish in the top four but my feeling, my understanding, what I like to share, is that this club is made to win trophies. In the Premier League, we cannot win it.

"In the Europa League, we have a 25-per-cent chance of winning it. So, I think we have to put everything into the Europa League."

United have been drawn against Spanish side Celta Vigo in the final four of the European competition with the first leg taking place in Vigo on May 4 and the second at Old Trafford on May 11.
