Melchiot: Both Chelsea and players need to unite for youth policy to work

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot says management need to make a decision about their academy talent.

But the Dutchman also insists players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek need to take their opportunities.

“I feel like there has to be a solution for you as a player and for you as a club. You have to sit down and make a choice, because players like Loftus-Cheek need to push on and take the opportunity," he told the Daily Star.

“We cannot put everything on the club, I have to be honest too. As a player you have to take your opportunity. If you don't take your opportunity, you should not be complaining.

“I always stand up for the players that are coming because I felt like I had my opportunities fair and square, it was all down to myself. It was up to me to explore and deliver the goods, and if I didn't, I wouldn't get it.

“Louis van Gaal, that was my man. He brought me in, he gave me the opportunity [at Ajax]. He had a World Cup winner on the bench just to play me when I was coming out of school. He didn't care. He came to me and said, 'I have Marcio Santos, who won the World Cup with Brazil, I just bought him in the summer and now I'm sitting with you in the winter, and I'm sitting down and asking you how would you feel if you were my number one on the right side?' And he just bought one of the most expensive right-backs in Holland, but he said he was still going to pick me.

“It's confidence, but it's also tricky because you get a lot of pressure. And you have to handle that pressure, because at that time Ajax was winning everything and fortunately Michael Reiziger left so the opportunity was for me right there.

“So now it's up to me, are you gonna take it or are you gonna let somebody else that they bought, a World Cup winner, play there? And I said 'no, I'm gonna take it.' So I took it.

“This is what I'm saying. I cannot only look at Sarri, I cannot only look at the club. I've got to look at the whole picture and I'm not there every day, but I can only say to you that at some moments I'm sure Sarri could give more opportunities to the players, to the young players."
