Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that Steve McClaren tried to sign him when he was manage at FC Twente.
The 24-year-old Dutch midfielder completed his move to Newcastle United from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven on Sunday in a £14.7million deal.
Wijnaldum was with Feyenoord during McClaren's first stint as Twente boss and admits he was the subject of interest from the former England manager.
"The coach turned Twente into champions for the first time - that is what everybody knows," Wijnaldum said on the club's official website.
"He led them to play good football and so has a good reputation. When he was at Twente, I was playing for Feyenoord and he tried to sign me, so it's funny that it's happened now."
