Man Utd's Owen misses out as Capello names new England squad

Manchester United striker Michael Owen failed to make Fabio Capello's latest England squad.

Capello unveiled his squad last night Crouch was named alongside Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Carlton Cole and Emile Heskey - a real slap in the face for the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle star.

Owen has spent most of this season on the Manchester United bench, but Crouch has found himself in a similar position since joining Tottenham although he did score after coming on as a sub against Birmingham on Saturday.

Aaron Lennon, who scored the winner for Spurs, is back in the squad and he is the favourite to play on the right in the absence of injured Theo Walcott.

David James is absent from the third successive squad but is still favourite to start for England should they qualify for the World Cup. He missed Portsmouth's defeat by Manchester City with bruising on his knee.

Paul Hart might have left him out in any case because James looks set to move to Spurs before the transfer window closes tomorrow. United defender Wes Brown is recalled after a long-term injury.

England Squad:

Goalkeepers: Foster (Man United), Green (West Ham), Robinson (Blackburn)

Defenders: Johnson (Liverpool), Brown (Man United), Upson (West Ham), Terry (Chelsea, capt), Lescott (Man City), A Cole (Chelsea), Bridge (Man City),

Midfielders: Wright-Phillips (Man City), Lennon (Tottenham), Beckham (LA Galaxy), Barry (Man City), Lampard (Chelsea), Carrick (Man United), Gerrard (Liverpool), A Young (Villa), Milner (Villa),

Strikers: Rooney (Man United), Heskey (Villa), Defoe (Tottenham), C Cole (West Ham), Crouch (Tottenham)
