Man Utd plotting to discard captain Rooney…but it will be costly

Manchester United are reportedly planning to get rid of Wayne Rooney next summer.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Red Devils chiefs are planning to 'jettison' the club captain at season's end.

Rooney is on a £300,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford which runs until the summer of 2019, but there is talk that he could be discarded around 20 months prior to the contract's expiration.

Getting rid of the 30-year-old could be a costly exercise which the Mirror suggests will cost the club around £26million.

Clubs in North America's Major League Soccer and the Far East's Chinese Super League are believed to be waiting in the wings for the Red Devils and Three Lions skipper who has fallen out of form this term.

It is believed that Rooney would be able to command wages almost on a par with what he earns now if he went to China, while MLS would be able to offer around £80,000, which former Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard is on at LA Galaxy.

Rooney has been dropped from Jose Mourinho's United line-up and was also axed fro the initial XI by interim England boss Gareth Southgate for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.
