Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is a step closer to joining Wigan Athletic.

The Sun says boss Warren Joyce has axed coach Joe Parkinson, paving the way for Scholes to join his back-room team.

Joyce has let long serving Parkinson leave the club as he starts a managerial shake up and is now preparing the way for a new team.

Parkinson had been part of the management team for the past couple of seasons and was also a coach at the club.

Latics chief Joyce is keen on Paul McGuiness and Jim Ryan, two former Manchester United mates, and would like to find a part time role for Paul Scholes.
