Man Utd hero Van der Gouw: I hope Depay is something special

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Rai van der Gouw has no doubts about the quality of new signing Memphis Depay.

Van der Gouw, who is currently goalkeeping coach at Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie, believes the 21-year-old's self-confidence will help him continue his progress in the Barclays Premier League and handle the step up to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"Depay had a fantastic season in Holland and a very good World Cup tournament before that," van der Gouw told ManUtd.com. "So, if you look at that, he can be a very exciting player for Manchester United.

"The only thing he still has to prove is if he can do all the things he did in the Eredivisie in England as well. Maybe he needs some time. For all the players who come to United, you are one of the stars and not the star for your club any more. He was the star at PSV but all of the players are stars at United.

"So that will change for him but I hope he will do something special for Manchester United. I think he does have it in him, he just always has to wait as it comes out naturally.

"I have read a few things about him and he is really professional on the pitch," added van der Gouw. "He does have the mentality to want to be the best player. One of the key things to be successful at the very top, like with Cristiano Ronaldo, was that he always wanted to be the best player in everything. If you have this mentality, the road to success is much easier."
