Man Utd defender Lisandro: Argentina very nervous before Mexico

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is proud of his form this season.

Martinez has proved his worth for Erik ten Haag's men and has now overtaken Spurs hardman Cristian Romero in the Argentina pecking order.

The United man said: “My advice to anybody is to have a good lifestyle and to share your experiences with the more mature players.

“You have to be ready to learn from other people and listen to what they say to you.

“But above all, you must not be arrogant, not be a know-all, to be disciplined and have good human values - to be a good person."

Those virtues will not spare Martinez and his team-mates from the brickbats of a devastated nation if Argentina's World Cup ends tomorrow night when they take on Poland in the Group C decider.

And he knows how deep the devotion runs - both inside and outside the dressing room.

Martinez added: “We were very anxious against Mexico because we knew it was a match we had to win.

"It was all or nothing and that was something we all felt.

"But we came through it and won and you could see from the scenes in the dressing room how happy we were.

“We have been criticised for the way we are playing, with people saying we were better in the Copa America and when we beat Italy in the “Finalissimo" at Wembley in the summer.

“But you cannot compare a World Cup with any other tournament or any other match.

“It is down to the details and how your opponents play as well.

“At the same time, we know we are capable of playing a lot better than we have so far and that we haven't reached our top level yet."

He added: “We are trying. I feel what it means to play for Argentina.

“We have a living relationship with the fans and it motivates us every single day because we know how much it means for them.

“But the key for us now is to remain calm. We can't afford to overload ourselves with too much pressure.

“We know how important it is for each of us to represent Argentina and wear this shirt. We have to give everything but you cannot do that if you are not calm."
