Man City boss Guardiola and Fernandinho impressed by young trio

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was delighted with his youngsters for their Champions League stalemate against Sporting CP.

City advanced to the quarter-finals 5-0 on aggregate after a goalless return fixture at home.

Guardiola sprung a surprise when he named defender CJ Egan-Riley a place in the starting line-up.

"CJ played really good and didn't miss the ball," said a proud Guardiola post-match.

"He's a 7/10 footballer, not exceptional in anything but that's a really good sign as a defender as he doesn't make any mistakes."

As well as Egan-Riley; James McAtee, 19, and Luke Mbete, 18, also appeared in the second half for their Champions League bows.

All three caught the eye of veteran captain Fernandinho who played alongside them against Sporting.

"Tonight's game shows the great work Man City have been doing with the academy," said the 36-year-old Brazilian.

"They have been training with us every day, know what to do and how we play. They felt really comfortable playing for us tonight and it's so great for them.

"I'm so happy for them and especially for CJ making his Champions League debut from the start. I hope they can play more for Man City."
