Luis Enrique: Why doubts persist inside Spanish media about Barcelona coach

COMMENT: When the top coaching jobs become available around Europe a familiar set of names are linked with each post and it is intriguing to consider whether newly-crowned FIFA World Coach of the Year Luis Enrique's name will be added anytime soon.

The 45-year-old led the Blaugrana to the domestic league, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble in his first season and after adding the Spanish Super Cup to that haul he guided the team to the FIFA World Club Cup last month.

Despite that highly-impressive collection of silverware, however, the question remains as to whether Luis Enrique is a great coach in the same mould as Pep Guardiola or merely guiding a ship that would steer a similar course under any good coach - and he would not fare so well elsewhere.

Unlike Guardiola, the current man in the Camp Nou hotseat did have previous experience at major clubs before taking over and at both AS Roma and Celta de Vigo he did not set tongues wagging or exceed expectations.

Among the media pack that covers Barça, there is little talk about how good Luis Enrique is and, while he garners respect, few see him as a visionary that is changing and shaping Barça.

That maybe, of course, is because the Catalan giants are now accustomed to winning, and winning in style, thanks to the litany of stars that they have, but opinion among journalists here is that the coach is playing psychologist to the players rather than trainer.

Should he be given a role where change is required and a plan implemented of his own making then he may well not be the shining light that Barcelona's trophy haul in recent months could lead one to believe.

On the flip side, some believe that it is Luis Enrique's no-nonsense approach and his ability to communicate his ideas to a group of players while building an atmosphere of togetherness and team spirit that has seen Barça continue to thrive and actually improve.

Being in charge of FC Barcelona is already on par with any job that may now be or become available, but as is so often the case, financial rewards and ambition can often outweigh almost anything else in the game.

While Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea all clamour for the services of Pep Guardiola, why are none of them considering breaking the bank to prise the current Bayern boss's successor away from Camp Nou?

Barça may be a unique club in that a system and style of play is already in place, but under Luis Enrique the club have excelled and the players too, with Lionel Messi being well-managed, Luis Suárez stepping up another level from what was seen at Liverpool and Neymar adapting perfectly to football and life in Europe.

Add to that the defensive solidity and his working of the transfer market, Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal will only make Barcelona stronger, while his willingness to allow players as such as Pedro to leave because he could see his future plans would only see the player held back have meant he is popular, within the game at the very least.

Luis Enrique will be in no rush to leave a job where he can continue to conquer all domestically and take on Europe's elite, but the time will come, probably in the summer of 2017, when a new challenge will be required. Would he succeed in the Premier League or would he need a club where everything is at his disposal and success virtually guaranteed, a la Guardiola at Bayern?

Should Barça become the first team to retain the UEFA Champions League, in its current format, at the end of the season and add another league title too, then maybe Luis Enrique will begin to be given the attention that Guardiola currently commands in major club boardrooms around the continent.
