Liverpool have taken a commanding lead in their Champions League round of 16 tie with Inter Milan after a 2-0 win at San Siro on Wednesday.

Second-half goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah proved the difference as the Reds now take a two-goal cushion back to Merseyside for the second leg on March 8.

Inter were the better side overall until Firmino broke the deadlock after 75 minutes.

Jurgen Klopp's side were relentless in their pressure in the first-half but Inter persisted with their plan to play out from the back.

And the home side came closest to scoring first when Hakan Calhanoglu cannoned off the crossbar from inside the box.

Simone Inzaghi must have given his players an inspired talk at half-time as Inter put Liverpool on the ropes early in the second stanza.

The Nerazzurri should have capitalised on their dominance by adding to the scoreboard, but they were unable to find the final pass as Liverpool backtracked into their own box.

Klopp had seen enough after 15 minutes in the second-half and decided to make a triple change as Fabinho, Sadio Mane and Harvey Elliott were replaced by Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Luis Diaz.

New signing Diaz looks an amazing signing for Liverpool as he immediately injected pace and fervour into what was a passive Reds attack.

The Colombian almost made an immediate impact after a one-two with Trent Alexander-Arnold, only for his shot to be blocked.

It didn't matter however as Roberto Firmino produced a magical glancing header to stun the San Siro crowd.

Salah - who was ineffective for most of the night - then popped up after 83 minutes to put the game beyond in doubt.

The Egyptian pounced on Virgil van Dijk's knockdown to finish past Samir Handanovic.

It was a brilliant smash-and-grab win from Liverpool after Inter looked the more likely to win for the majority of the contest.
