Liverpool legend Lawrenson: Why Salah criticism is unfair

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson insists criticism of Mohamed Salah's goalscoring form this season has been unfair.

The Liverpool number 11 has been playing in an unsettled front three for the Reds with this season with Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota missing much of it through injury.

New boys Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are still learning the style of play Jurgen Klopp likes his side to use and that is having an effect on Salah.

Lawrenson told TalkSPORT: “It's unusual for him [Salah]. I think one of the problems is that he's playing with different strikers every week and in different formations.

“The thing with him is that he needs to be happy to play and you can see it on his face. He's a bit like, 'What's happening here?' Consequently with them not playing particularly well, he's not had too much service – you don't suddenly become a bad player.

“People think it's because he's signed a new contract and that sort of thing. It's nothing to do with that. It's just that he's not been playing well and consequently, he hasn't had too many opportunities."
