England manager Roy Hodgson has stated that Jamie Vardy would have been happy playing as goalkeeper for the Three Lions a couple of years ago.
Following his stunning campaign with Leicester City, Vardy looks set to star during the upcoming European Championships and the striker got his preparations off to a fine start when scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Turkey at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
England boss Hodgson has been using Vardy in a wide position for England though and many feel that the striker is not being properly utilized.
However, Hodgson does not want to change his system just to accommodate Vardy and has stated that the former Fleetwood Town man is more than happy just to be in the England setup.
Hodgson said: "I'll say one thing about Jamie Vardy.
"We have a lot of competition for places in our team. We want to have the benefit of two systems of play; we don't wish to be hamstrung to one system.
"And furthermore, I don't intend at the moment, with respect and deference to lots of other players, to play a system which suits Jamie Vardy and only Jamie Vardy alone. It has to suit a lot of players.
"Jamie was playing for Fleetwood Town a few years ago, I think if you'd have said to him then 'you're going to play for England', he would have been more than happy to play centre-half or goalkeeper."
