Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley has revealed that Jamie Vardy was thrilled to sign a £1,000-a-week contract with the Conference club in 2011-12.
The 29-year-old helped his former club to the Conference title before moving to Leicester City in a £1million deal just after ten months with the club.
Last week, Vardy signed a new £80,000-a-week deal with the Foxes and Pilley believes that he is earned every bit of it.
Pilley told the Daily Mirror: "We offered him four figures a week, his eyes lit up and his mind had moved by then.
"We are proud to have had him at our club and are not surprised he has gone on to do what he has done.
"He hasn't won the league yet but he broke that Premier League record and I fully expect him to get the golden boot as well which would be quite a season.
"I've read he is now on £80,000-a-week and he has to be worth that if he can be instrumental in Leicester winning the league - which it looks like he can be."
