Lazio sports director Angelo Fabiani admits they tried for Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski and Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi.
Fabiani says they made attempts for both players.
He revealed: "The first two players had been indicated by our coach but they were operations that didn't go through.
"We decided to switch to something else, lowering the average age. Zielinski was an object of evaluation, as well as Berardi, then we made other choices. We made an official offer to Napoli and nothing was answered, we went on our way with shared decisions."
On Juventus veteran Leonardo Bonucci, Fabiani also said: "He has an extraordinary career behind him, we did what we had to do ahead of time, the transfer market is open and let's see. Let's give the boys time to settle in, let them immerse themselves in the new reality."
