JAN TRANSFER SPECIAL: Who should Lampard sign for Chelsea in first window?

Chelsea's primary goal going into the second half of the Premier League campaign is to secure a top four finish.

Despite currently sitting in 4th place, there's every chance that the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and quite possibly, Sheffield United could take over Chelsea's position if Frank Lampard's side fails to sign the right players.

Chelsea, at the moment, are in need of a new left-back, a striker and a creative force on the wings - on that note, here's a look at the players they could sign to fill those roles in January:

Left-Back

Marcos Alonso has been a key player for Chelsea since he arrived at Stamford Bridge back in 2016, but over the past two seasons his abilities have waned, making him somewhat of a weakness on the left flank.

Emerson Palmieri has shown some promise since arriving at Chelsea as Alonso's understudy, but the Brazilian has been unable to put together a string of great performances for the Blues which has forced many fans to question his consistency.

As such, Chelsea are expected to sign a new left-back in January with both Alonso and Emerson said to be in attracting the interest of some Serie A clubs.

The Blues are currently linked with moves for Leicester's Ben Chillwell, Porto's Alex Telles and Valencia's Jose Gaya. From the looks of things, though, Chillwell would be the most ideal addition to Chelsea's squad.

The 23-year-old has been a key player for Leicester this season, helping them thwart multiple attacks per game and making some decent contributions in the attacking third.

Considering his Premier League experience, he'd be an excellent addition to Chelsea's lineup, as he would not need to 'adapt' to the league for a prolonged period of time as many foreign players often do.

Chillwell is expected to cost Chelsea a fee in the region of £60m - a hefty fee, but one that would prove to be worth it nonetheless.

Striker

With 12 goals in 19 appearances, Tammy Abraham has done a decent job of leading Chelsea's line throughout the first half of the season, however, he has struggled to consistently exert his influence on games which has caused Chelsea fans to question whether he is ready to be the club's number 9.

On that note, Chelsea will reportedly be in the market for a new striker in January. Timo Werner and Moussa Dembele have been identified as potential January targets as both strikers have impressed for their respective sides since the start of the 2019/2020 European football season.

Werner, though, seems like the best option for Chelsea considering how well he's currently playing for Leipzig.

Werner has scored 18 goals in 17 Bundesliga games for Leipzig putting them on the right track towards usurping Bayern Munich's throne at the end of the season as they currently sit atop the league table after 5 months of Bundesliga action.

His 18 league goals by December means he has already bettered his tally from last season when he bagged 16 league goals in 30 games which more or less exemplifies his progression as a player.

Werner possesses blistering pace which allows him to run in behind defenders. The Germany international is incredibly difficult to mark, and as such, he is likely to be a huge success in the Premier League.

Winger

Willian has been one of Chelsea's most influential players in the past decade, but now 31 years old, the Brazilian winger is past his prime and can no longer perform at the level he once did for the Blues.

He has done a decent job under Frank Lampard this season scoring four goals and registering four assists in 19 games, but going into the second half of the Premier League campaign Chelsea needs to sign a younger and more productive winger.

The Blues are currently linked with Jadon Sancho and Wilfried Zaha ahead of the January transfer window. While both players are quite similar in terms of their styles of play, Jadon Sancho appears to be the best option for Chelsea due to his age (19) and productivity having scored nine goals and made nine assists for Dortmund in 15 appearances.

The Englishman would take the Premier League by storm with his big bag of tricks as well as his ability to create clear cut goal scoring opportunities for his teammates.
