The background of Naby Keita's cloak-and-dagger move to Liverpool yesterday has been revealed.
The RB Leipzig midfielder has been signed by Liverpool for a staggered fee, though won't move to Anfield until next season.
BILD says after victory over Freiburg on Sunday, Keita jumped on a plane to Manchester where he spent the night before undergoing a medical on Monday.
Upon passing his tests, Keita signed a pre-contract with the Reds.
Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff negotiated the transfer details on Monday evening ahead of signing off. The deal involves three potential fees for RBL:
- Should Liverpool miss European qualification this season, Liverpool will pay just under €65 million. Over €10 million more than his exit clause.
- On reaching the Europa League, some €70 million will be paid
- Reaching the Champions League again will cost about €75 million
Liverpool confirmed the agreement this morning.
