Mark Hughes is contemplating changes ahead of Southampton's Premier League clash against Chelsea.

The Saints find themselves in a familiar position, just hovering above the relegation zone in 16th position.

And Hughes knows that something has to change if they are to get enough points to stay in the division this season. He is hoping a formation change could do the trick.

He said to the Daily Echo: "We revisited that (a formation with three centre-backs).

"It served us well toward the back end of last year when we just needed to get maybe a better foothold in games.

"I think we played well and ok for the most part in our games, but maybe on occasions we have been a little bit loose in the defensive third, but I thought we looked nice and solid.

"It's food for thought and that's what I wanted."
