Hodgson implores Man Utd's Rooney to follow path of England great Charlton

England manager Roy Hodgson has challenged captain Wayne Rooney to emulate the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney managed to close in on Charlton's all-time England goalscoring record of 49 goals after the striker managed to score the opening goal in the Three Lions' 4-0 victory over Lithuania in the European Championship qualifiers on Friday.

Now only two behind on 47, Rooney looks certain to break Charlton's long-standing record and enter his name in the record books.

While breaking the record is certainly a great feat, manager Hodgson has challenged the Manchester United skipper to lead the Three Lions to victory in a major tournament - like Charlton did in the 1966 World Cup.

The England boss said: "Bobby Charlton was arguably England's best ever player.

"If Wayne can break into that in the future when he stops playing then that's fantastic for him. Bobby Charlton is up on a pedestal and it will take time for any of the modern England players to get up to that level.

"To do it I suppose the player would have to be very successful at European Championship or World Cup level as Bobby Charlton was.

"Scoring the goals Wayne has is a great achievement, too, but ideally goals have to come with success but Wayne will be remembered. We haven't got that many players who have played 100 games for England. We haven't got that many players who have captained England."
