Steven Hammell fears manager Stuart McCall may be lured away if Motherwell produce a top-two finish this season.
The 'Well currently sit three points in arrears of Rangers as they continue to push for an automatic spot into Europe but Hammell believes the price the club will pay for success will be losing their boss who may move onto greener pastures.
"That's where we are at Motherwell and that's the nature of things. If he does well, it has happened before with managers impressing and then moving on.
"But for him to be in that position we need still to get over the line. We're two or three wins away anyway from finishing second and finishing off a good season.
"The interest comes with the territory for players and managers. If they're doing well, they move on to bigger and better things.""I think, if we do finish second in the SPL, that will happen. If any jobs come up, his name will be linked with them and rightly so," he said.
However, even if Motherwell do remain in third, they still may have an opportunity to qualify for the Champions League if Rangers are not granted a UEFA license after entering into administration last month.
