FIFA president Sepp Blatter dodged questions over the severity of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's punishment for biting yesterday.
Suarez was banned for four months from all football after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's midweek World Cup win.
Blatter yesterday sidestepped questions on the subject, but general secretary Jerome Valcke defended the sanctions - and urged Suarez to seek treatment.
Speaking at FIFA's daily media briefing in Rio de Janeiro, Valcke said: "A message to Luis Suarez? I think he should find a way to stop doing it. I think he should go through treatment because it's definitely wrong.
"It's not the first time. If it's the first time, it's an incident. If it's more than one time it's not just an incident and that's why the sanction has to be exemplary."
Responding to Chiellini's criticism of the duration of the ban, he added: "You will always find someone who thinks the punishment is excessive.
"This decision has been made by the disciplinary committee based on what they have seen. It was seen by millions of people and it is not what you want children around the world who are playing football to see. Wherever you are playing football, whatever you are doing in life, this should not happen."
