The father of Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has recalled how a Boxing Day trip to Anfield inspired his son's pro career.
After being dressed down by his coach at FC Volendam four years ago, Micky was taken to England by his father, Marcel, to consider their options.
Marcel recalled on the Friday Move: "We went to Liverpool - Arsenal. Micky then played in the youth team at Volendam. He did not yet have a contract and was told by his then trainer that he was not strong and fast enough. He asked what Micky came to do.
"So we went to Liverpool and I decided to take on my fatherly role."
He continued: "I wanted to give him a tenner every weekend, but at some point he has to earn something himself. He said: 'Dad, I'm really not going to go to the supermarket. Beep beep, do you want a receipt? I'll just do that. Don't do that. Give me another six months and then I promise it will be fine'."
Exactly six months later, Van de Ven received his first contract with Volendam, after Wim Jonk had taken charge.
"He owes a lot to Wim Jonk. Now he plays for Tottenham. He said: 'Dad, I'm not supposed to take care of you all my life, right?' Haha, that's what's happening now."
