Ex-Man Utd boss Moyes admits Phelan error: I wanted Meulensteen to stay

Former Manchester United boss David Moyes says he was wrong to push Mike Phelan out of the club when he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson's assistant Phelan was among those to make way but Moyes would last less than a year before he was axed.

Moyes told beIN SPORTS: "I wouldn't do anything differently but there a few small things.

"In hindsight, I should have kept one of the staff that Alex had - which I tried to do and it didn't work out.

"I offered Rene (Meulensteen) the job and he decided not to stay. If I knew Rene wasn't going to stay, I would have been better keeping Mike.

"Managers take their whole staff with them when they go to new clubs so it wasn't unusual."
