Ex-Aston Villa captain Agbonlahor: We must tie down Watkins

Aston Villa must work to quickly tie Ollie Watkins to a new contract in the coming months.

The Premier League outfit have seen Watkins find his best form under coach Unai Emery.

The striker has now become the first Villain to score in five successive Premier League games.

Speaking on talkSPORT, ex-Villa forward Gabi Agbonlahor joked: “I was having a bit of banter with him at the weekend, I said: 'You need to calm down now!'

“I think he's about 40 off [his Villa record] now. I said I'm hoping he gets pushed out to the wing like I was for the last half of my career. But no, he's in outstanding form, the first Villa player to score in five in a row."

“I think it does," he added on how Danny Ings leaving gave more responsibility to Watkins.

“We've signed a young lad, [Jhon] Duran, from the MLS. If you're the main striker who's going to play every game, the manager's got faith in you, you're going to be in great form.

“I think he's been quite unlucky as well, with some of the chances he's missed. He's now starting to get that confidence, everything he's hitting is going in."

He then finished: “He's a great asset to Villa and we should tie him down."
