Ex-Arsenal, Man Utd forward van Persie retires

Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has retired from professional football.

The 35-year-old has spent the last 18 months with boyhood club Feyenoord.

He played his final game in a loss to ADO Den Haag on Sunday.

"The goal was go out with honour because football is my passion,' the Dutchman told the day prior to his final match.

"I'm glad I made that choice already because I've had a whole year to get mentally prepared for retirement.

"If I had only taken the decision a few weeks ago, it would have been difficult to let it sink it in such a short period of time."
