Everton boss excited by Barkley condition

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes midfield ace Ross Barkley is fit and firing as the Toffees' opening Premier League fixture with Watford draws nearer.

Barkley enjoyed a breakout season in 2013/14 under Martinez, however struggled at times with injuries and form last term. Following his side's 3-1 friendly victory over Scottish side Hearts on Sunday, Toffees boss Martinez said thatthe 21-year-old is currently in the best shape he has seen him in.

"Ross Barkley is the freshest that I have seen him and I am looking forward to seeing him play on Tuesday", Martinez told The Liverpool Echo.

"The way we want to play, midfield is a very important area and I feel now we have the options we are going to need during the season.

"I am delighted with that. We will have to be flexible tactically and play in different formations and the key area for that is the midfield but the understanding the players have developed is very good."
