Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots attempted to take a pragmatic approach after seeing his side lose 2-0 to Italy on Monday night.
The Red Devils conceded goals either side of half-time to go down to the Azzurri in their opening Euro2016 match with Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku in particular struggling for Wilmots' side.
However, the manager opted to avoid individual criticism even though he admitted the Manchester City and Everton stars were not at their best.
"It's very difficult to say," said Wilmots when asked why his side lost in Lyon.
"We were too compact in the first half an hour, then we conceded the first goal from a ball over the top, that was an individual mistake, clearly.
"De Bruyne and Lukaku didn't have the best of nights, but I don't want to criticise individuals."
Belgium next meet the Republic of Ireland in Bordeaux on Saturday in what is now a must-win fixture for Wilmots and his men.
"We have to win our next two games now to make the knock-out stages and that is what we'll try to do," he added.
